  • History

The Seychelles were officially discovered in 1500 by Portuguese caravels criss-crossing the seas in quest of new lands to explore and new resources to plunder.

Due to their location astride the shipping lanes to the East Indies, the Seychelles became a favourite haunt of pirates who preyed on merchant shipping in the 17th century. They were known to hide their hauls on the islands. Legend has it that some of their treasure still buried there...

The islands owe their name to Viscount Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Chancellor of the Exchequer to King Louis XV of France, even though he never set foot on them. The French set up shop on a number of the islands, to which they gave names such as as Ile d'Abondance (now Mahé) or Ile de Palme (now Praslin). They would use them as a half-way staging point on the way to their mercantile interests in the Far-East. In 1811 the British fought and besieged the French, and added the Séchelles to the British Empire.
The archipelago's name, "Séchelles", was subsequently anglicised to "Seychelles".
The British ruled over the archipelago until its independence in 1976, abolishing slavery, populating it and developing its economy based on coconut products, copra, cocoa and vanilla.

In 1977, although officially a republic, the Seychelles, which maintain very close links with Great Britain, joined the Commonwealth.

Nowadays, with more than 80,000 inhabitants, the cosmopolitan population of the Seychelles is truly a multicultural melting pot, with the Grand Blancs, descendants of the French colonists, mixed-race people, Mozambican and Malagasy Africans, Creoles, Chinese and Malabars...
